The Lagotto Romagnolo
The Lagotto is a small to medium sized dog distinguished by his curly, water resistant coat. Since Etruscan times (7th Century BC) Lagotto have existed in the vast marshlands of Romagna in north-eastern Italy. They evolved naturally to assist in hunting waterfowl through marsh and reeds, flushing and retrieving to land or to punt. As the marshes in their native lands were drained many began to use the Lagotto’s fantastic nose and hunting instinct to find valuable truffles and the breed came to be seen as Truffle Dogs. However the breed has retained all of the gundog characteristics and are well capable of fulfilling their original function as a gundog. Lagotto are highly intelligent, agile and affectionate dogs.
